Every day, drink half your body weight in ounces of filtered or purified water. The many incredible health benefits from plain old water are excessively numerous for me to go into here. I will just restrict myself to explaining how water aids detoxify your system by carrying away waste products more effectively and helping your colon, digestive and body detox systems to do their jobs. So if you are on a detox diet, it's crucial that you drink loads of water.

Your blood is 83 per cent water, and it requires a good volume of water to help it carry the toxins and waste products that we know pass through it and to transport the nutrients it carries to every part of our body. Our cells, too, require water to carry away their metabolic waste products. And, obviously, our colons need water to aid with the crucial task of removing waste.

Throughout my years of nutritional counseling, I've been struck by how many of my clients have told me they have felt hungry when I could tell, from their symptoms and eating habits, that they were really thirsty. When you are doing a liver detox try drinking a few glasses of water at least twenty minutes before a meal and see if you don't need less food to feel full. Notice, too, the refreshed, energized feeling that drinking a lot of water will give you.

When you do drink, remember that water is best taken at room temperature Between meals, though you can drink maximum half a glass of water (120 ml/4 fl oz) during meals. Drinking too much of any liquid while eating can dilute your hydrochloric acid, which is very necessary in the digestion of protein and the assimilation of acid-based minerals like calcium and iron. And wait until two hours after you have eaten to drink any more.

Most of us tend to be dehydrated, drinking too little water and excessive coffee, tea and caffeinated fizzy drinks. These all tend to dry us out, thanks to the diuretic properties of caffeine. If you wait to drink until you really feel thirsty, you've waited too long: dehydration starts long before we are conscious of it. So make sure you drink minimum half your body weight in ounces throughout your day. And don't substitute another fluid, particularly during the entire time you are on a body detox. It is water that your body needs. You may be astonished at how much better you feel when this need is finally met.

Water, Water, Everywhere . . .

I would not exactly tell you to avoid bottled water, if only because you need to make your detox as easy you can. But you must be aware that quality-control standards for bottled water are often less rigorous than those for tap water.

'Mineral' waters are tested for thirteen chemicals and bacteria - less than a quarter as many materials as tap water. There are also no requirements, as there're for tap water, for mineral waters to be tested daily or even weekly. For 'spring' waters, there's no legislation at all.

So if you're really concerned about high-quality water, your greatest bet is a home filtration system.
